Crashes probed

State police at Lehighton reported investigating several automobile crashes in recent days.

Troopers said about 2:25 p.m. on Feb. 9 Janet Gartland, 53, of Saylorsburg, was operating a 2008 Kia along Kunkletown Road near Silver Springs Blvd., in Eldred Township, Monroe County, when it left the road and crashed along the berm.A two vehicle crash was reported about 2:50 p.m. on Feb. 8 along Kunkletown Road in Ross Township, Monroe County. Troopers said Carol Ann Babock, 55, of Kunkletown, and Chad W. Wiersma, 24, of Nazareth, were both westbound when the front of Babock's 1999 Volkswagen Jetta collided into the rear of Wiersma's 2006 Ford Escape.Babock sustained a minor injury and was taken to the Pocono Medical Center, East Stroudsburg, by West End ambulance. Wiersma was not injured. Troopers cited Babock for careless driving.A crash occurred about 10:53 p.m. on Feb. 9 in the parking lot of the Beltzville Bar and Grill, in Towamensing Township, Carbon County. Troopers said Lisa A. Boyer, 43, of Palmerton, driving a 2005 Chevrolet Monte Carlo, backed out of a parking space and struck a 1999 Chevrolet Cavalier operated by David Christman, 25, of Palmerton, who was leaving the lot. No one was injured. Troopers cited Boyer for careless driving.A one vehicle crash was reported about 6:46 a.m. on Feb. 9 along Little Gap Road in Lower Towamensing Township, Carbon County. Troopers said Kevin M. Horvath, 34, of Lehighton, operating a 2005 Ford Sport Track, was eastbound at a speed too fast for conditions on the partially snow-covered road when he lost control.Horvath attempted to counter-steer, however this caused the vehicle to spin sideways in a clockwise manner, troopers said. The Ford struck a curb and then a mailbox.Horvath was not injured. He was cited for driving too fast for conditions.Troopers investigated a two vehicle crash on Feb. 10 about 2:45 p.m. along Walnut Drive, in Lower Towamensing Township. Troopers said Ashely N. Pechacek, 18, of Germansville, was driving a 2002 Chevrolet Cavalier northbound and attempting to turn onto Drift Road and traveling at an excessive speed when she lost control after cresting a hill.The Cavalier began to slide sideways and Pechacek tried to regain control by counter-steering, troopers said. The Cavalier struck the front of 2004 Ford school bus driven by Rodney Kleintop, 59, of Lehighton.Pechacek was injured and taken to the Palmerton hospital by Palmerton ambulance. Kleintop was not hurt.Troopers said Pechacek was cited for driving a vehicle at a (un) safe speed.A one vehicle crash occurred about 10:24 p.m. on Feb. 10 along Mountain Trail Drive in Lower Towamensing Township. Troopers said Robert K. Ashton III, 18, of Easton, was westbound coming from the Blue Mountain Ski Resort when he passed another vehicle. Ashton lost control of his 2007 Mazda 3 which went onto the left shoulder and struck a culvert. After impact the car continued downhill and onto an embankment.Ashton sustained a minor injury and was taken to the Lehigh Valley Hospital, Salisbury Township, by Palmerton ambulance. A passenger, Annalise K. Sutcliffe, 18, of Easton, was not injured. Troopers cited Ashton for reckless driving.A one vehicle crash was reported about 9:37 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 11, along Maury Road, in Penn Forest Township, Carbon County. Troopers said Codey J. Drum, 17, of Lehighton, was driving a 1994 Dodge Shadow eastbound near SR903, when he lost control due to snow and ice on the road. The vehicle went onto the berm and collided into a tre head-on causing the Dodge to spin into another tree with the passenger side.Drum was partially ejected from the car. He was taken to the Lehighton hospital by Lehighton ambulance for treatment of minor injuries, troopers said. He was cited for driving too fast for conditions.Assisting troopers at the scene were volunteers from the Franklin Township Fire Company and fire police.
