PV girls clinch top seed in MVCs

Stroudsburg and Pleasant Valley played in a girls-guys double header Friday night. The Lady Bears won the first game, 51-40 to clinch the No. 1 seed in next week's Mountain Valley Conference playoffs.

The nightcap then proved to be quite the thriller, but saw the local boys fell in double overtime 58-55.GIRLSPleasant Valley went off offensively in the second and third quarters and ran away from Stroudsburg, 51-40.The Lady Bears outscored the Mounties by 16 points in the middle two quarters thanks in large part to Amber Chieffo scoring 13 of her game-high 20 points."I think if we would have made some more layups and free throws early on that we would have had a better showing," said Pleasant Valley head coach Nadia Gauronsky."Fortunately we turned it on in the second half and did a better job. That's important and we can grow from there."The Bears went on a 5-0 run midway through the first quarter, but the Mounties answered with a 7-1 run of their own to close with a 9-8 lead. Brittany Neal hit an elbow jumper at the buzzer to give Stroudsburg the advantage.Chieffo then got Pleasant Valley rolling by scoring 11 points in the second quarter and helped the team to 18 points. Teammate Arden Cicluycis then added nine in the third to spark a 19-point quarter which left the Bears up 45-30 heading into the fourth. The Bears won the game and locked up the No. 1 seed even with their best player Kelecia Harris having an off night offensively. Harris failed to make a field goal and finished with just four points."It's a good feeling because a lot of people have been keying on Kelly," said Gauronsky. "It shows that other people are willing to step up and score. Amber did a great job as a senior, and little (Jordan) Meckes did well too."Pleasant Valley had all eight players that saw the floor score. Meckes added seven, while Courtney Miller tacked on five. The Bears will have to wait to find out their opponent, as the results of other games will determine who they play next week in the opening round of the MVC playoffs. Gauronsky is looking forward to her team's chances."I think all the teams that are in the MVC playoffs are pretty much even," Gauronsky said. "Everybody has beaten each other at one point or another."I think the little bit of advantage that we have is that we get to play a home game. It's nice to have support and have the crowd behind us."BOYSIt was another case of missed opportunities for Pleasant Valley in its 58-55 double overtime loss to MVC rival Stroudsburg.First, the Bears shot a poor 17-for-34 from the free throw line. They connected on just 11-of-21 in regulation and it ended up costing them the game in the end.Secondly, Pleasant Valley had three close looks at the rim in the final seconds of regulation but missed all three. Selwyn Wright missed a runner in the paint before Sekou Jones and Marquis Brown missed consecutive put-back attempts."It was like a rerun of the Pocono Mountain East game from the other night," said Pleasant Valley head coach Ken Piontkowski. "We simply missed too many opportunities to win the game."If we make one more free throw in regulation we win. If we make either of those shots at the end we win. Looking back, we definitely didn't deserve to win the game with the way we played."As the game headed into the first overtime, Stroudsburg quickly mounted a short lead and had Pleasant Valley searching for ways to score. Dre Shivers found a way as he hit a big three to tie the game. Then, with roughly eight seconds left, Brown stepped to the line with the Bears down one. He calmly sank the first free throw to tie the game at 51. Unfortunately, as seemed to be the case the entire night, he missed the second free throw and his chance to perhaps win the game. On a night where Brown had a game-high 22 points, he and his Bears needed one more.Pleasant Valley became more offensively strapped in the second overtime as Wright, Jones and Sean Dekmar had all fouled out. With each team maxed out in fouls, the game became a free throw battle. Stroudsburg went 5-for-9 while Pleasant Valley shot 2-for-7.Shivers was fouled while shooting a three with about four seconds to go, but failed to make any. He purposely missed the last attempt and managed to get the ball back at the top of the key thanks to a rebound from Devon Howard.Shivers' game-tying attempt came up short and bounced off the front of the rim as time expired."You can look at the end of the game and the missed free throws and the last second three, but we lost the game well before then," Piontkowski said."Most people want to focus on what happens at the end of the game. They forget about all the missed free throws and all the missed layups in the second and third quarters. That's where we lost."Depending on what happened between Pocono Mountain East and Pocono Mountain West Friday night, the Bears may face Stroudsburg again in the first round of the conference playoffs."I really don't know what to think or expect," said Piontkowski. "One night we play well and can compete with anyone in the area. The next we miss every shot we take and lose to an inferior team. I honestly couldn't tell you which team will show up next week. Hopefully for us it isn't this one."GIRLSSTROUDSBURGMyles 0-0-3-0, Neal 2-0-0-4, Devivo 2-0-1-4, Borden 6-1-3-13, King 0-1-4-1, Tucker 4-4-7-12, Browning 0-0-0-0, Foust 0-0-0-0, Rodas 0-4-7-4, Bettini 1-0-0-2.
