Set your clocks, check your stocks

Daylight Saving Time ends on Sunday and the Managing Director's Office of Emergency Management reminds Philadelphians to refresh their emergency supplies when resetting their clocks.

"In the wake of Hurricane Sandy, when many folks have used their emergency supplies, make sure you replenish those supplies for your home and vehicles," said Deputy Managing Director for Emergency Management Samantha Phillips. "If you haven't put together a Home Emergency Kit or a Go Bag for use when evacuating your home, this is a good time to get your kits ready for the upcoming winter."With residents losing power for several days due to the storm, it highlights the fact that Family Emergency Kits should have at least, if not more than, a three-day supply of bottled water, essential medications for each family member, and foods that don't easily perish, such as canned foods, granola or energy bars, a flashlight, radio and extra batteries. Phillips recommends checking the expiration dates on any food, water and batteries in your kits. If any of these items will expire in the next six months, replace them with fresh supplies and use them before they expire."Pets are part of the family, too," Phillips said. "Include at least a three-day emergency supply for them, as well."While checking your emergency supplies, remember to test your smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors to make sure they are in good working condition.
