Palmerton, Pleasant Vy. grab softball wins

Palmerton and Pleasant Valley scored softball wins in local sports play on Saturday.

In other action, Northwestern girls soccer and Pleasant Valley tennis also ended up on the winning side.


ES South-Palmerton

Palmerton only needed four innings to post a 16-1 non-conference win over visiting East Stroudsburg South.

Martina Herring tossed four solid innings for the Bombers, striking out six and allowed only two walks to post the victory on the mound.

Lauren Campbell paced the Bombers on the offensive with three singles, three runs scored and three RBIs, while Janel Tracy chipped in with three singles, two runs scored and two RBIs.

The Bombers' leadoff hitter Michelle Rickert added an extra base hit with a double.

Pleasant Valley-Freedom

Pleasant Valley scored six runs in the sixth inning to help gain an 8-2 non-league victory over Freedom.

Rachel Sisco had two hits, one a double, and scored a pair of runs for the Bears (1-1). Madison Shanenurger added two hits while Nicole Kregeloh collected a double and knocked in two runs. The winners also received a hit and two runs scored from Jordan Meckes.

Rikki Correll gained the pitching win, striking out three while not walking a batter.

Mahanoy Area

Mahanoy Area ran away with a 13-5 victory over the Lady Olympians.

Jocelyn DeMarco paced Jim Thorpe with a single and a double, while Sydney Wernett added two singles.

The Golden Bears' Jamie Rago and Brianna Pearson were both a home run shy from hitting for the cycle, while teammate Marcella Scheeler did hit a round-tripper and double.

Jim Thorpe falls to 0-2 on the season, while Mahanoy Area moves to 1-0.

Emmaus finished as strong as it started to post a 9-2 non-conference win over visiting Northwestern.

Cassidy Sullivan paced the Green Hornets with two triples, a singles and three RBIs, while Miryah Palko finished with two singles, two runs scored and two RBIs.

Brooke Heller accounted for the Tigers' two runs with a two-run homer in the sixth inning.

ES South-Palmerton

After trailing 5-0 after three innings of play, East Stroudsburg South rallied to take advantage of several Palmerton miscues for a 15-6 non-conference victory.

Jorge Santiago led the Cavaliers with three singles, two runs scored and two RBIs, while Tito Rodriguez added three singles and three runs scored. Dan Alicea chipped in with two hits, a run scored and a RBI.

The Bombers' Tyler Svetik finished with three singles, two RBIs and a run scored, while Tanner Gutekunst had a perfect day at the plate going 3-for-3 with a run scored.

Freedom edged Pleasant Valley for a 7-6 non-conference win.

-Exeter Township

Three second half goals helped Northwestern pull out a 4-2 non-conference win over Exeter Township in the Falcon Tournament at Salisbury.

Anna Fricchione opened the scoring for the Tigers (2-0) with a first-half goal, while teammates Michaela Lacek, Sara Jones and Sarah Segan all scored in the second half.

Jones, Haylee Kubat, Sabrina Mertz and Angela Motolese were credited with assists.

Johanna Shank scored both of the goals for Exeter Township.

Nazareth-Pleasant Valley

Two goals from Hannah Oren was enough for Nazareth to score a 2-1 non-conference victory over host Pleasant Valley.

After a scoreless first half, the Blue Eagles' Madalyn Bachert and Elizabeth Coyle were credited with assists for setting up Oren's two second half scores.

Dianna Connor was the PV player to post a goal on the day.

Dana McAllister recorded the assist on Connor's goal.

The Blue Eagles outshot the Bears 13-10, while the Bears (1-1) held an edge of 8-5 in corners.

The Bears' keeper Janelle Pastrana finished with 11 saves, while her counterpart Caitlyn Remaley grabbed nine.


Pleasant Vy.-Nazareth

Pleasant Valley pulled out a 5-2 non-conference win over host Nazareth.

Vincent Voulo, Jon White and Jonathan Walmach all posted singles wins for the Bears.

J. Thorpe, Tamaqua at Palisades Invitational

Jim Thorpe and Tamaqua both took part in the Palisades Invitational over the weekend.

The Lady Raiders had the best showing finishing third out of a nine team field, while the Lady Olympians were right behind in fourth place.

On the boys' side, the Raiders took home a sixth-place finish as a team, while the Olympians settled for seventh.

The Blue Raiders' Christine Streisel led all locals as she finished first in the javelin, second in the discus and third in the shot put. Teammate Amanda Solt had a good day scoring a first in the shot put and a third in the discus.

Tyler Hope paced the local boys with two first place finishes (100 meter dash and javelin), while teammate Eric Hertzog scored gold in the 110 hurdles.

The Olympians' Ben Moore finished second in the javelin, while the Blue Raiders' Caitlin Trainer (300 hurdles), Amber Carroll (1600 meter) and Cecily Kohlmeir (400 meter), along with the Olympians' Courtney Capper (3200 meter) all finished second as well.

The Olympians' Shannon Green (long jump) and Kayla Susko (400 meter) and the Blue Raiders' Kelsey Patrick (1600 meter) all earned third-place finishes.
