Palmerton traveled to Northwestern Wednesday night as two teams on a mission squared off in Colonial League play.

The Bombers were looking to extend their three-game season-opening winning streak, while the Tigers were looking for a win to get back to the .500 mark.

When the dust settled, Northwestern senior Sydney Sevrain and junior Kailyn Jones each hit on five three-pointers to pace the Tigers to a 62-33 win.

Sevrain – who finished with a game-high 21 points – came out with the hot hand, hitting on four of her first six shots, three of which were from beyond the arc. Meanwhile, Jones snuck up on the Blue Bombers, bursting out with three three-pointers in the third quarter and finishing with 15 points.

“I was glad to see Syd come out and hit some threes early because when her and Jones are hitting shots, we can be a top team,” said coach Chris Deutsch. “The most encouraging thing tonight was our defense. That’s one thing we’ve been harping on is doing a good job defensively, and we did that tonight.”

Palmerton came into the game averaging 61 points in its three wins.

The Tigers went on a 12-2 run in the first quarter, and led by double digits the remainder of the opening half. Jones’ hot hand in the third quarter helped stretch the lead to 28 points, and a 5-0 run by Northwestern to open the fourth quarter made it a 56-23 game with just under six minutes left to play.

Palmerton’s Bethany Morgan finished with 17 points. The stifling Northwestern defense held Kayla Cincilla to just two points on two first quarter free throws.

Northwestern has put together wins in its first two league games of the season after losing its first two games, which were to EPC teams. The non-league games gave the team a chance to settle into its new role and give younger players some experience before the league schedule started.

“It was great. Those are two big wins for us, and we did really well as a team tonight. Having the two wins in the league games is huge,” said Sydney Sevrain. “We have girls in different positions this year, and it’s taken a little while, but we’re starting to get used to each other again, and that makes a difference.”

The wins also give Northwestern added confidence as they enter a difficult stretch of games.

“I thought we were close after Saturday’s game (a loss to Emmaus), Monday’s Saucon game (a 63-26 win) gave us a lot of confidence. and tonight, I thought we did the same things that we did Monday, sharing the ball and girls stepping up and making shots,” said Deutsch.

... Palmerton was without high-scoring sophomore Brianna Moore. Not having Moore on the court allowed the Northwestern defense to key more on senior Cincilla.
