Concourse Club collects items for local food banks

Every little bit helps, especially this time of year with the holiday season in full bloom.

With that thought in mind, members of the Palmerton Concourse Club held their Christmas gathering Thursday at the Holy Trinity Lutheran Church in Palmerton.Marlyn Kissner, Concourse Club member, said members of the organization collected canned goods that will be distributed to the Christian Action Council of Palmerton Area Churches (CACPAC)."We started collecting canned goods as a way of supporting the local food bank," Kissner said. "We had everyone bring a canned food item."Kissner, who spearheaded the canned good collection, said the idea stemmed from her involvement with the Greater Lehigh Chamber of Commerce, where she serves as executive vice president, regional chambers, councils and BBRP."In my role at the (Greater Lehigh Valley) Chamber, I work very closely with communities and found that so many food banks are running low on supplies due to the high demand," she said. "What we're finding is there are so many people who are out of work, or can't afford food, and it's not just people without jobs."In all, Kissner said over five full boxes of canned goods and nonperishable items will be distributed to needy families in the area."The women in the Concourse Club are extremely generous," she said. "This is really nice, and I feel really good that we're bringing people together for the holiday season."Amy Lalik, who serves as co-chair of the Concourse Club Hospitality Committee, said the group decorated a tree, and surrounded it with the food donations. The decorations were provided by Concourse Club members Connie and Gloria Ferko."The tree was a team effort," Lalik said. "The women in the entire organization are extremely giving."Afterward, the group attended a concert by the Pleasant Valley Choral Society conducted inside the church.
