Driver falls asleep, crashes on I81

A New Hampshire driver fell asleep at the wheel of his vehicle and crashed along Interstate 81 in Kline Township, Schuylkill County. State police at Frackville said the crash occurred about 6:25 a.m. on Sunday, Nov. 27.

Troopers said Gerald Mafera, 21, of Derry, was driving a 2004 Cadillac Seville northbound in the left lane when he fell asleep. The car went onto the berm at which point Mafera awoke and attempted to return to the road.The car overturned and came to rest on the berm.A passenger, Christine Mafera, 50, same address, was not wearing a seat belt and was ejected from the vehicle.She was taken by Ryan Township ambulance to the Hazleton General Hospital for treatment of what troopers said were not serious injuries. The driver was not injured.Damages were termed heavy to the vehicle. Volunteers from the Ryan and Delano townships fire companies assisted at the scene.
