Book discussion

The Tamaqua Public Library hosts a monthly book discussion event, providing readers with an opportunity to discuss their favorite editions as well as become acquainted with new authors.This month's discussion will begin at 6 p.m. Nov. 28, at the library on South Railroad Street.The featured book will be "The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks," written by Rebecca Skloot.Lacks was a poor African American immigrant who died from an aggressive form of cancer at the age of 30.A sample of her cancerous tissue was used in research, without her permission, and led to the finding of a key component in scientific research.Next month's selection will be "Plain Truth" authored by Jodi Picoult.New members are always welcome.Anyone planning to attend may contact the library at (570) 668-4660 to ensure there are enough copies of the featured selection.The annual Christmas book sale will be held from Nov. 28 through Dec. 31.Up to date library news and information is available at

President Jean Machamer conducted the business session.Rose Vallee provided the invocation.Vice President Doris Brobst updated the sick list, adding Gladys Weaver.October and November birthdays will be celebrated at the Dec. 1 meeting, also the last day to make a reservation for the annual Christmas party.Due to the holidays, there will be no meetings on Nov. 24, Dec. 22 and Dec. 29.The group is collecting non-perishable items, such as canned goods, to donate to the Salvation Army food pantry.The group meets every Thursday, at 1 p.m., at the community center.Anyone 55 or older is welcome to join.Every meeting is followed by social and pinochle games.Advent adventures"Family Advent Adventure," a four-week program for all ages, will be hosted by Zion Lutheran Church over the next four Sundays.The program is designed to prepare participants for the coming of Jesus and the celebration of His birth.In addition to hearing the Christmas story as told in the gospels, participants will decorate a tree, construct crafts and learn about some favorite Christmas carols.The sessions will conclude with Christmas caroling, hot chocolate and cookies.The program will be held at 8:30 a.m. and 9:20 a.m. on Nov. 27, Dec. 3, Dec. 11 and Dec. 18.For more information, contact Suzanne Cunningham at (570) 386-9262 or call the church office at (570) 668-2180.Community ThanksgivingA Community Thanksgiving service will be held at 7 p.m. today at Trinity United Church of Christ.A free Community Thanksgiving dinner will be held at the Tamaqua Salvation Army Community Center on Thursday, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. The center is located at 105 W.
