Carbon man's felony charge is withdrawn

Prosecutors withdrew the lone felony charge filed against an Albrightsville man arrested in connection with rioting on the streets of State College following the dismissal of Penn State coach Joe Paterno.

The Centre Daily Times reported prosecutors dropped the risking a catastrophe charge Wednesday at 41-year-old Patrick McLaughlin's preliminary hearing.Authorities say McLaughlin set fire to a shirt and garbage after taking to the streets of town with thousands of others after the university trustees announced that Paterno was being relieved of his duties immediately.Initially, investigators said McLaughlin set the fire near a television news van that had been overturned and was leaking fuel.Police said he was taken into custody and admitted to lighting a fire.State College officials said at least $20,000 worth of damage was done during the rioting. More than a dozen people face pending charges and police are trying to identify dozens of others.Pictures were posted of suspected rioters online seeking the public's help in identifying them.
