Community Awareness Forum in JT on Monday

The Jim Thorpe Area School District will be hosting a Community Awareness Forum on Monday, Nov. 7 at 6 p.m. to give residents a chance to learn more about school safety and the communication between parents, students, the school and community.

This forum will also give the public the chance to learn about programs that are offered in the district. It is open to the public and it will be held in the Large Group Instruction room (LGI) of the Jim Thorpe High School.Superintendent Barbara Conway said the district has been working with representatives from Behavioral Health Associates to put on the program for the public.Presentations will be made by Dr. Helene Katz, Behavioral Health Associates; Lynai Miller; Behavioral Health Associates; Kim Mullick, Probation Office; Chief Joseph Schatz, Jim Thorpe Police Department; Superintendent Conway; and Principal Thomas Lesisko, Jim Thorpe High School.Schatz will speak about the involvement the police department has with the school district and how they work together.Specific details regarding the recent weapons case that occurred on Oct. 18 will not be focused on at the forum.On the evening of Oct. 19, school officials were notified of a possible weapons violation that occurred the day before. Jim Thorpe police started an investigation on Oct. 20.Schatz stated the investigation concluded that a student had brought a semi-automatic handgun and small knife into the L. B. Morris Elementary School on Oct. 18. No one was injured. After police concluded the investigation, appropriate charges were filed.At Monday evening's school board meeting, the student was expelled for no less than one year.Conway said Monday's forum will provide information and suggestions about community and school co-operation and communication."This forum is about moving forward," Conway added.
