A Carbon County man was placed on probation on Tuesday after pleading guilty in a child endangering case. He was one of four defendants in pending criminal cases to enter a guilty plea before President Judge Roger N. Nanovic II.

Thorpe incidentEric Hertweck, 30, of Albrightsville, was placed on probation for two years on a charge of endangering the welfare of a child.Hertweck was arrested by Jim Thorpe police for an incident that occurred on Aug. 8 along W. Sixth Stree. Hertweck went to the residence of his estranged wife, Jayleen Hertweck, to pick up three children for a visitation. The children ages were nine, five and four.After getting into his vehicle he pulled in front of the home and yelled at his wife's live-in boyfriend, Michael Deacy. He then rammed his vehicle into Deacy's while the three children were in the car.His plea was to the charge involving a nine-year-old girl, who Hertweck said was his stepdaughter.Hertweck claimed his actions were in anger and that he "lost his head."Nanovic also ordered Hertweck to get both a mental health and drug and alcohol (D&A) evaluations and follow any recommendations for treatment, and make restitution to Dacey for damages to his vehicle totaling $959.37. He was given credit for seven days spent in jail on the charge.Other pleasChristine A. Maniaci, 47, of Lehighton, was sentenced to serve one to one day less 12 months in the county prison on a charge of criminal attempt to obtain a controlled substance-adderall.She was arrested by state police at Fern Ridge for an incident at Carrigan's Pharmacy in Penn Forest Township. She went to the pharmacy with prescriptions for another individual and tried to have them filled. The incident occurred on Feb. 8. Troopers said the person who the prescriptions were made out to died in January.Maniaci is currently serving a four month prison term in Schuylkill County for a parole violation. She violated her parole in that county with the Carbon arrest. She finishes the Schuylkill sentenced on Nov. 24.Nanovic ruled his sentence is consecutive to the Schuylkill term. He also ordered her to get a D&A evaluation, and zero tolerance imposed on D&A use.Maniaci is also facing a probation violation proceeding in Carbon County. She was on probation for driving under the influence (DUI) at the time of the arrest.Jason Charles McFarland, 35, of Lehighton, was sentenced to serve two to 12 months in prison on a charge of simple assault.He admitted assaulting Kimberly Sherry on June 16 at 134 S. Fourth St., in Lehighton. It was the second time McFarland was arrested for asssaulting Sherry.McFarland has been in the county prison for the past three and a half months on a probation violation for the first assault incident with Sherry.McFarland told Nanovic that his relationship with Sherry is over.Nanovci ruled the new sentence would run consecutive to the sentence McFarland is currently serving for the probation violation. He was also ordered to get a D&A evaluation, attend and complete anger management counseling, and have no contact with Sherry.Ronald P. Dries, 29, of Lehighton, was placed on probation for three months on a charge of possession of drug paraphernalia.He was arrested on May 29 by Mahoning Township police following a vehicle stop. Dries was passenger in the car and was acting suspicious, according to police. The driver gave police permission to search the vehicle and found in a backpack on the floor on Dries' side of the vehicle was various drug paraphernalia used in smoking marijuana. Dries admitted the items were his.Nanovic also ordered Dries to get a D&A evaluation.Each defendant must also pay court costs, which total around $1,000, and a $50 per month supervision fee while on probation or parole.
