Fillies roll into semis

It's safe to say that the Marian Fillies (15-2) volleyball team is talented. They showed just that on Halloween night dismantling Salem Christian in the District 11 Quarterfinals. It took the Fillies a little under an hour to take care of business in three straight sets 25-10, 25-11, and 25-10.

Most sports enthusiasts would agree a young team will have its struggles early on and that's exactly how the Fillies started their season. Who can blame them? The Fillies seven-girl rotation includes three freshman, two sophomores, and two juniors."I had no idea what kind-of year we were going to have before the season started," said Marian Head Coach John Falabell. "We got our heads handed to us in a scrimmage against Allentown Central Catholic early on and we've worked hard to get where we are."The growing pains for the Fillies look to be in the past and Salem Christian felt the fury of Marian's youth. The Fillies attacked the Eagles in every facet of the game, never giving them a chance to get into the game."There is no doubt we have a talented team," added Fallabel. "They can go as far as they want to go. We worked on some different plays tonight, a lot of stuff we saved for this time of year and the girls handled it well."All three sets were never really close with the Fillies obviously being the better team.In the first and second sets it was all about the fast start for Marian. The Fillies jumped out to a 17-4 lead in both those frames. The Eagles would battle a little after those points in the match, but could only muster 10 and 11 points in those sets. The third set was the most competitive out of the three. The Eagles hung around early, but it was more of a case of Marian making some mistakes than Salem Christian elevating their play. Half-way through the match the Eagles closed within four points of Marian, but it was short lived as the Fillies pulled away finishing off the Eagles 25-10.Fillies junior Mary Kate Sherkness was certainly in the Halloween spirit last night. It looked like Sherkness chose a Wonder Woman costume to wear under her jersey. Sherkness loaded up on the Eagles like a sling shot constantly booming the ball into the middle of Salem Christian defense. Sherkness finished with 17 kills, two aces, and four digs on the night."Mary Kate came into this season ready to play," said Fallabel. "She did a lot of off-season training and got on a very up-scale team in where she went to nationals. She's over a 1,000 kills and the kid has definitely "got it."With the win the Fillies will play tonight at 6 p.m. against rival Nativity. One thing is for sure, Marian will be playing a much tougher opponent in the Golden Girls."This is the real deal," said Fallabel. "We have to be on top of our game and I'm sure it's going to be a battle. Nativity is a talented bunch of kids and were looking forward to playing and possibly moving on to the District title game."The Fillies' Sophie Myers added eight kills with Abbey O'Donnell also helping out with 32 assists.
