Tamaqua driver facing DUI count

A Tamaqua man faces driving under the influence (DUI) and related charges following an incident on Saturday, Oct. 22.

Police were monitoring traffic at 12:57 a.m. Saturday and heard the loud exhaust from a white Dodge pick up truck that was traveling north on SR309, in the area of the Hess Express station. The noise was loud enough to be heard even though the windows in the patrol car were closed.The officer followed the truck and made a vehicle stop and identified the driver as Daniel T. Day, 48, of 514 Arlington St.An odor of alcohol emanated from Day and the officer observed an open case of beer on the floor in front of the passenger seat. An open can of beer was also on the floor, in the upright position. Day admitted to not having a driver's license and a records check indicated his license had been suspended for DUI.After failing field sobriety tests, Day submitted to a breath test, which indicated a .118 blood alcohol content, more than twice the legal limit of .08.
