The Preceptor Alpha Upsilon Chapter of Beta Sigma Phi Sorority will meet today at the home of Cathy Santee.Cake pan orders will be due at this meeting.The chapter met Sept. 30 at the home of Donna Sterling.Wanda Keefer was welcomed back after a lengthy leave of absence.During the business session, topics of discussion included information on personalized cake pans; cookie baking to send to service members for Christmas; and a dinner theater outing on Oct. 29Following the business session, Sterling presented a program on wines, including samples for tasting.Board of HealthThe October meeting of the Tamaqua Board of Health was held at the municipal building with Randolph Gormley, Earl Boettger, Shirley Becker and Health Enforcement Officer James Barron in attendance.Barron reported that he made a general inspection at the Rite Aid Pharmacy, as well as six spot check inspections during September: Martha's Place, Tiki, Inc.; Grande Pizza; Freddy's Pub; the American Hose Company; and JR's Tavern. He also received and adjusted six complaints: two concerning rubbish/trash; three infestations; and one strong odor complaint. There were no cases of reportable diseases during the month.The next meeting will be held at 10 a.m. on Nov. 9.Senior citizensThe Tamaqua Seniors met Oct. 6 at the Tamaqua Community Center with 89 members in attendance.Treasurer Dolores Walck conducted the business meeting and provided her monthly report.Rose Valle provided the invocation, entitled "A Prayer For Healing" and secretary Joan Ann Garber provided her report. Jane Springer, Doris Brobst, Gladys Weaver and Alice Miller were all added to the sick list.The group meets every Thursday, at 1 p.m., at the community center.Anyone 55 or older is welcome to join.Every meeting is followed by social and pinochle games.Flu shotsThe Tamaqua Area School District, in conjunction with the Pennsylvania Department of Health, is offering seasonal, injectable Trivalent Influenza Vaccine to all students who meet vaccine recommendations for the 2011-2012 school year.For more information, parents/guardians may contact the school nurse.SS. Peter and PaulThe parish of SS. Peter and Paul Catholic Church will celebrate its 100th anniversary with a special Mass on Oct. 16, at 3 p.m., with Bishop John Barres as main celebrant and homilist. The special Mass will be followed by a reception at the West End Banquet Hall in Mahanoy City.Worldwide Rosary Day will be observed this Saturday, Oct. 15. A public Rosary Rally will be held at noon, at the fountain in Depot Square Park, at Tamaqua's Five Points. The public is welcome to attend.Bethany ECThe Rev. Kevin Roberts will officiate at the 10:30 a.m. worship service this Sunday in Bethany Evangelical Congregational Church. Nursery care is provided.Sunday school classes will be held at 9:30 a.m.Also on Sunday, the TYM staff will meet at 11:45 a.m.; a service will be held at the Hometown Nursing Center at 2:30 p.m.; and the monthly service at the Tamaqua ABC High Rise will be held at 6 p.m.Activities for next week will include: Wednesday, Prayer time at 8:30 a.m., Tamaqua Youth Ministry will meet at 6:30 p.m.; Thursday, Men's Fraternity will meet at 6:30 p.m.; Saturday, Musician rehearsal at 9 a.m., Praise practice at 9:30 a.m. and the quilters will meet at 10:30 a.m.
