Trashing a piece of history

Dear Editor:

Last week as I rode by Center Street in E. Chunk, past the high school, I noticed something disturbing. The two light poles at the bottom of the steps were removed. They area was marked with yellow ribbon so no one would trip over what was left of them.I know that entrance is no longer used as the main entrance, though it was during my tenure at school. Still it gave the place character. The old cast posts looked shay even when they were not lit. I realize one of the bulbs was broken, but that was an easy thing to fix, easily replaceable!I'd like to know why the wizards on the school board had them removed? For what reason? The flagpole is also gone!As far as I'm concerned they trashed a piece of history! Might just as well rip off the lights on either side of the doorway, too. They are also old and look really sharp. Spend some more taxpayer money doing something stupid, that need not be done.A native ChunkerPete BottE. Mauch Chunk
