The very prospect of a program that aims to strengthen families and help children succeed may seem too good to be true.

Yet, that's exactly what families can expect when they sign up for a free program for parents and caregivers and their middle school-age children.Back by popular demand, the Strengthening Families Program will be available in the Northern Lehigh School District over a seven-week period.The program will be held on Tuesdays from Oct. 4 through Nov. 15 from 5:30-8 p.m. A free weekly dinner is provided for the entire family from 5:30-6. The program runs from 6-8. Free child care is provided for younger family members.Parents and caregivers can enhance their parenting skills by: learning to set limits and showing love; making house rules; encouraging good behavior; protecting their children from substance abuse; and learning to handle stress.Kids can learn to prepare for their teen years; communicate with their parents; deal with stress and peer pressure; and avoid alcohol and drug problems.The program is sponsored by the Northern Lehigh School District, Penn State Extension, and Valley Youth House.For more information, contact Kay Rau at (610) 767-9846, or
