Schuylkill crashes

State police at Schuylkill Haven reported on two crashes that occurred on Schuylkill County roadways over the past weekend, one a hit and run.

A two vehicle crash occurred about 9:34 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 24, along SR61, near SR183, in North Manheim Township. Troopers said John W. Frie Jr., 54, of Saint Clair, was beginning to move after a traffic light turned green to go northbound when his 2008 Chevrolet Equinox was struck in the rear by a 1999 Ford Escort driven by Mark A. Wise, 40, of Cressona.A passenger with Frie, Bruce C. Ernst, 53, of Pottsville, sustained a minor injury but did not require immediate medical treatment. He was the only one reported injured.Troopers cited Wise for driving a vehicle at a (un) safe speed.The hit and run occurred about 7:39 a.m. on Sunday, Sept. 5, along Deep Creek Road, in Barry Township. Troopers said a vehicle was driven eastbound when it crossed over the center line into the on coming lane then onto the berm where it struck a embankment with the drivers' side. The vehicle then traveled about 50 more feet before striking a mailbox with the drivers' side mirror.The vehicle then re-entered the road and the driver fled the scene. Debris located at the scene indicated the vehicle lost its front bumper and the drivers' side mirror. The vehicle is believed to be a small pickup truck or sports utility vehicle.
