Fermented apples not good for man ... or beast

There's nothing like good friends to get you through those rough times when no one else can help you and for Jeffrey Jarrett when the worst happened to him, his friends tried to cheer him up, sort of.

It started when roommate Robert Young arrived home to find Jarrett dead so he did what any good friend would do. He called his buddy Mark Rubinson and the two pals took Jarrett out barhopping in downtown Denver.Talk about your "Weekend at Bernie's!" For those unfamiliar, "Weekend at Bernie's" was the 1989 comedy that depicted two friends who pretend their boss is alive to escape getting killed for learning too much. They end up dragging him all over so that people would think he was alive to save their lives from a hitman. In this case there was no hit man, but Rubinson and Young managed to take Jarrett to two different area bars to have a few last rounds to the tune of $400 in memory of their friend. Of course, they decided Jarrett was paying the bill and took the money from his account to pay for them. I suppose it was the most pragmatic thing to do since Jarrett wasn't going to be spending it anymore.Unfortunately, both men discovered that they should have shared their night out on the town with their friend while he was still alive, because their little joyride has managed to net them charges of abusing a corpse, identity theft and criminal impersonation. Apparently the police didn't appreciate "Weekend at Bernie's" either. Here's hoping the elevator ride to the Pearly Gates didn't cost $400, eh?One thing's for sure, police in Sweden won't be charging the two men with a stealing a swing set. The perpetrator in this crime wasn't people, but an elk and not just any elk, but a drunk elk. Apparently a homeowner in Storebro, Sweden, discovered upon coming home one afternoon, his children's swing set had disappeared and the yard was littered with bits of apple.Upon investigation the police believed the swing set was stolen by an inebriated elk with larceny on its mind. Apparently, the elk population in Sweden must get carded at bars so they choose to eat fermented apples instead. In this case the police believe a drunk elk stole the swing set or rather probably walked off entangled in the equipment. While the elk is on the loose and the police have no real solid description, it was good enough to leave the swing set by a tree in a nearby forest.I have to wonder if the elk wasn't perhaps having a night out with a moose. In a separate story, police in Stockholm investigating a report by resident Per Johansson found a drunk moose tangled in the branches of an apple tree. This incident started when Johansson heard a roar in his neighbor's yard and upon investigating found an angry female moose tangled in the tree.He called police and rescue workers and among them they worked to saw away branches until the drunk animal could free itself. After its ordeal, Johansson said it spent the next day or so in Johansson's yard dazed and confused.Apparently elk and moose aren't the only strange criminals these days. In San Diego, beloved Claymation star Gumby tried to knock off a convenience store. He wasn't very successful as being a big green rectangle can be awkward and not very intimidating. The clerk who he tried to rob actually thought it was a prank and didn't take it seriously which was probably enhanced when the clumsy character struggled to stay costumed as he fled with his accomplice. The would-be thieves, Jacob Kiss and Jason Giramma turned themselves and Gumby in to police a short time later. They claimed the Gumby costume was the master mind, but I think they probably should have tried to be Pokey's posterior instead.Moving east across the country, another burglary was thwarted when an Arkansas man taking his first plane ride and hoping to take some aerial photos of his home managed to catch two men breaking into it instead. Steven Lynn of Bay, Arkansas was aboard a private plane and flying over his home when he saw the thieves burglarizing his home so he called 911 and an uncle living nearby to intercept them. The sheriff reported the men changed their minds when the uncle arrived at the house and unloaded their van before fleeing, but Lynn's plane followed them until the police were able to arrive and arrest them. Now Roosevelt Smith III and Joseph Peel will be contemplating the error of their ways in prison.I guess it's true these days that there is always someone watching us.Til next time …
