Palmerton stadium lights' bid comes in just under $100K

A project to replace its high school stadium lights could cost Palmerton Area School District just under $100,000.

The district received eight bids on Thursday, with J.B. Electric, Minersville, submitting the apparent low bid of $99,469 to do the work. That figure was $10,512 lower than the next lowest bid of $109,981 turned in by Thomas L. Hoffman Co., of Allentown.Other companies that bid were George J. Hayden, of Hazleton ($14,500); Barry J. Hoffman Co., of Allentown ($114,970); Bonavitacola, of Southampton ($119,705); Ace Electric, Inc., of Allentown ($142,000); Wind Gap Electric, of Wind Gap ($149,770); and Phillips Brothers Electronic Contractors, of Glenmoore ($159,000).The bids will be reviewed before a recommendation is made.A bid award could be made when the school board meets at 7 p.m. Tuesday.Superintendent Carol Boyce said the project will install four new steel poles, foundations and lighting fixtures at the stadium.Boyce said a prior insurance inspection conducted by an engineer found the current lights to be "faulty."Since the high school football team has several away games scheduled for mid to late-season, Boyce said the fall sports season - namely football and soccer - will not be impacted by the project. The project is included in the list of bond projects after the board agreed last fall to borrow $5 million and restructure its 2006 bond issue.
