Bricks fall, nine families evacuated in Slatington

Nine families had to be evacuated from a building in Slatington on Sunday after several bricks fell into the street.

Slatington Police and Fire officials had to remove the families from the building, located at East Church and Main streets, shortly after 10 a.m. No injuries were reported.The families were forced to vacate the building for about three hours while a structural engineer was called in to inspect the building.A stretch of East Church Street, between Main Street and Middle Alley, remained closed as of this morning. Parts of Main Street, between Washington and Second streets were also briefly shut down Sunday, but have since re-opened.Mayor Walter Niedermeyer, who visited the scene this morning, told the TIMES NEWS the families have since returned to the building.The building houses Rinkers BBQ Pit and several apartments.
