Not a bad start to the grid picks season

For a while I was feeling real good last week as the scores started to filter into THE TIMES NEWS Sports desk. Up until the Lehighton-Marian score was final, I was sitting with a perfect score.

When the dust cleared after the entire slate of Week One contests were in the books, I had record of 11-4, quite a bit better than I opened up last season. The jury is still out on who Andy Steinmetz has picking his games for him this year and Jason Boris sits between myself and Steinmetz in second place.I went back and forth on whether to pick Catasauqua or Wilson and went with the team who hardly ever loses at home on a Saturday afternoon and got burned. I was also surprised how much Downingtown East defeated Central Catholic by. And then there was the Northampton Konkrete Kids falling to Stroudsburg that cost me another game. There are a couple of games that could go either way this week so it should be another interesting session here for the Old Crystal Ball. So here goes:TAMAQUA AT LEHIGHTON - Raiders got off to a positive start last week and the Indians put up quite a few points against Marian. This game could come down to who has the ball last ... Lehighton, 28-21.LINE MOUNTAIN VS. JIM THORPE - Olympians have to get through some growing pains and face another tough test this week. And don't forget, the game will be played at Panther Valley ... Line Mountain, 25-13.MARIAN AT SCHUYLKILL HAVEN - Game has already been moved to Saturday night and if you want to see an aerial circus, this isn't the game you want to see. Both teams showcase their running attack here ... Schuylkill Haven, 27-14.PANTHER VALLEY AT SCHUYLKILL VALLEY - Panthers have to find the right ingredients to put up some points ... Schuylkill Valley, 38-14.HONESDALE AT PLEASANT VALLEY - Wouldn't want to be Honesdale this week as the Bears are smarting for a win after last week's loss ... Pleasant Valley, 35-7.WILSON AT NORTHERN LEHIGH - Bulldogs started the season with a win, while Warriors have yet to score a point ... Northern Lehigh, 35-6.NORTHWESTERN AT SAUCON VALLEY - Panthers had the misfortune of opening up against league stud Pen Argyl. Tigers started slwo but then blew out Palisades. Look for another Tiger win here ... Northwestern, 20-7.SOUTHERN LEHIGH AT PALMERTON - Bombers started slow and then scored three times in the final quarter to beat Notre Dame. Spartans couldn't get it going against the Bulldogs. Bombers must avoid mistakes and big line has to come through for them to have a shot ... Palmerton, 20-19.POTTSVILLE AT STROUDSBURG - A long ride to the Poconos for the Crimson Tide and they'll face a Stroudsburg team that impressed quite a few people last week ... Stroudsburg, 21-19WILLIAMS VALLEY AT TRI-VALLEY - The Vikings look to be the better team on paper, but in this rivalry, you have to look at more than that ... Tri-Valley, 14-13.ALLENTOWN CENTRAL CATHOLIC AT FREEDOM - Early season LVC matchup that could be a dandy. The Vikings pull away though ... Central Catholic, 27-14.EASTON AT NAZARETH - This one comes as close as you get it. Something tells me take Easton, but we're going with Bill Brong, Vinnie Andrews and the boys ... Nazareth, 14-13.LIBERTY AT NORTHAMPTON - Konkrete Kids are going to have to show me something before I pick them again. Plus, if you didn't notice, it's Hurricane season ... Liberty, 27-7.WHITEHALL AT EMMAUS - The Zephyrs put a lacing on Blue Mountain last week and the Eagles are expected to win their Berks County division. Enough proof for me ... Whitehall, 20-7.NOTRE DAME AT CATASAUQUA - The Roughies burned me last week. Not this week ... Catasauqua, 30-0.
