The Tamaqua girls soccer team got its season off to an impressive start by capturing the championship of the Schuylkill Haven Tournament on Saturday.

GIRLS SOCCERTamaqua inHaven TournamentThe Lady Raiders started out their season in fine fashion with three wins on their way to a Schuylkill Haven Tournament title. Along the way, they downed Tri-Valley, Schuylkill Haven and Williams Valley.In its opening game against Tri-Valley, Kailee Rottet's two goals and a goal apiece by Ali Knepper and Kayla Hope gave Tamaqua a 4-0 victory. Alex Wagner, Kaleigh Rabenold and Taylor Gerber all had assists and Chey Bates stopped five shots in goal.In the next round, the Lady Raiders defeated host Schuylkill Haven, 3-2, in overtime. Rottet scored on a direct kick from about 30 yards out to snap a tie amd give her team the win. Rottet scored twice in the game, both unassisted, while Hope added the other off a Rottet assist. Bates stopped 12 shots in the strong effort in net.In the final game, Tamaqua rolled to a 7-0 win over Williams Valley.Rottet's hat trick led all scorers as she added an assist. Hope added two goals in the game and Gerber and Amanda Hinkle scored once each. Bates had two saves for her second shutout of the day.Tamaqua stands at 3-0 on the young season.FIELD HOCKEYNo. Lehigh-LibertyNorthern Lehigh came up on the short end of a 1-0 overtime decision at the hands of Liberty.The Lady Hurricanes' Kali Schumock scored off an assist from Alyshia Dellatore with about five minutes remaining to propel her team to the non-league win.For Northern Lehigh, which outshot its opponent 8-4, Nicole Horn stopped three shots in the goal.BOYS SOCCERNo. Lehigh-PalmertonNorthern Lehigh erupted offensively to rout Palmerton, 7-1 in Colonial League action.Channing Shiffert led the way with four scores for the Bulldogs. Teammates Jimmy Bilger, Ryan Perkowski and Josh Pritash all had single scores. Zeb Shiffert and Bilger also had two assists in the well-rounded effort.For Palmerton, Spencer Shigo prevented the shutout by nailing twine with a goal in the first half, assisted by Cody Ursin.Northern Lehigh outshot Palmerton 16-3 and improved to 2-0 on the season..Northampton-Pleasant Vy.The Bears dropped a tough decision at the hands of visiting Northampton, 1-0.Matt Hardy's second half goal lifted the K-Kids to the win in the non-league contest.The Bears lost despite getting off four shots on goal and compiling eight corners in the game.Tamaqua-Schuylkill Vy.Tamaqua dropped a 3-2 non-league decision to Schuylkill Valley.The Raiders took the early 2-1 halftime lead before SV tied it up and scored another goal in the second overtime session.Kriss Gross scored his team's first goal and then the winning score in the OT.For Tamaqua, Jake Fegley scored off an assist from Zach Ruba and Cesare Picone tallied off a feed from Kyle Sabol.The winners outshot Tamaqua 13-7 in the game. The Raiders' Tyler Cimino stopped 10 shots in the strong effort in goal.GIRLS VOLLEYBALLNorthampton-Pleasant ValleyPleasant Valley rallied from a two-game deficit to tie Northampton, but couldn't maintain the momentum and dropped a 15-25, 20-25, 25-22, 25-18, 13-15 decision.Pleasant Valley (1-1), was led by Breanna Joseph with 17 kills, eight blocks, eight digs and an ace. Teammate Courtney Miller added nine kills and three blocks. Mackenzie Dorney had 18 digs and eight kills,; Andrea Giardina contributed 18 digs; and Steph Schmidt had 23 assists.Northampton won the JV contest, 25-18, 25-18.Panther Valley-WeatherlyPanther Valley posted a 25-11, 25-19, 25-16 victory over Weatherly.Amy Yusella and Chrissy Micholik both had nine kills for the Panthers. Yusella added five aces and 11 digs while Micholik also had seven aces. Teammate Deanna Focht chipped in with seven digs.For the Wreckers, Sarah Dolinsky had seven kills, 11 digs and a block while Alicia Panzarella contributed two kills, 22 digs and two assists. Jess Adamczyk added a kill, eight digs and a block.Marian inBeth. Freedom TourneyMarian posted a 5-7 record at the First Kill Tournament at Bethlehem Freedom High School on Saturday.The Fillies participated in two different pool play events during the day.In the morning session, Marian placed third out of four teams and had an overall record of 2-4 competing against Unionville, Bethlehem Catholic and Schuylkill Valley. Teams were re-seeded for the afternoon session where the Fillies had a 3-3 record playing against Pennsbury, Notre Dame of Green Pond and Bethlehem Liberty, They finished second in their pool. Marian's top performances were a 1-1 split against Bethlehem Catholic and a 2-0 victory over Liberty.Individually for the Fillies, Marykate Sherkness had a huge tournament with 76 kills, a hitting percentage over .400, 32 digs and four aces. Also contributing were Joanna Butala (four kills, three blocks); Nicole Collevecjio (36 digs, five aces); Rebecca Hartman (14 digs, seven kills, three aces); Sophie Myers (seven kills, two blocks); Emily Pilla (14 digs, seven kills, four aces); Lauren Nietz (12 digs); and Abby O'Donnell (98 assists, 12 digs, four aces).
