Slatington man died from head-on collision on SR309

Officials have released the name of the man who died in a head-on collision Wednesday night on SR309 in West Penn Township. See Thursday's TIMES NEWS story.

Donald Leiby, 45, of 8515 Rextown Road, Slatington, was driving his Chevrolet Silverado northbound when a tractor trailer lost control, crossed the median and impacted Leiby's vehicle head-on. A few minutes afterwards a Chevrolet sedan heading northbound struck the trailer of the truck as it jack-knifed across the road just near Overlook Drive, which is just north of SR895, Snyders.Authorities believe the truck may have lost control when it struck one of five commercial batteries lying on the road. West Penn Township police are investigating with assistance from state police in Frackville. The road was closed and traffic detoured for almost six hours after the crash while state police out of Reading reconstructed the accident.Police have not yet released details about the accident or the identities of the other drivers. Anyone with information about the batteries is asked to contact police at (570) 386-1100.
