Vavra swims well at Nationals

Allysa Vavra had a strong showing at the 2011 ConocoPhillips USA National Swimming Championships on Tuesday at Stanford University's Avery Aquatic Center.

Vavra, a Panther Valley High School graduate and current Indiana University standout, finished second in the "B" final of the 200 IM.Vavra, who entered the meet seeded 58th in the event with a seed time of 2:19.20, just missed qualifying for the "A" final by swimming a 2:16.06 in the prelims. That was the 12th best time and less than a half second off the a top-10 time needed to qualifying for the championship final.Vavra continued to improve in the "B" final, recording a time of 2:14.81.In addition to Vavra, Northwestern High School senior Madison Burns also competed in the 200 IM. Burns' prelim time of 2:23.06 placed her 133rd out of 173 swimmers who qualified for Nationals.The meet will continue for the next three days, with Marian High School grad and University of Georgia star Kristen Shickora swinging into action today. Shickora is seeded 10th out 210 swimmers in the 100 backstroke. The prelims for the 100 back were part of the session that was scheduled to get underway at 12 noon today. The finals for the 100 back will be held after 9 p.m. tonight.On Thursday, Vavra and Burns will both take part in the 400 IM. Prelims for that events are in the 12 noon session. Vavra is the 21st seed while Burns is seeded 91st. There are 151 swimmers who qualified for the event. Finals in that 400 IM will take place in the 9 p.m. session on Thursday.Shickora will also be in action on Friday in the 200 backstroke. She is seeded 38th out of 206 qualifiers in the vent. The 200 back prelims are in the 12 noon session on Friday. The finals in the event are in the 9 p.m. session on Friday.
