The Preceptor Alpha Upsilon chapter of Beta Sigma Phi Sorority met July 28 at Heisler's Dairy Bar. The meeting included an installation of officers for 2011-2012. The officer slate included: Lori Schmerfeld, president; Donna Gerber, vice president; Donna Sterling, recording secretary; Pat Kibbler, corresponding secretary; and Marie Umbriac, treasurer.Plans for the upcoming year were discussed, including fund-raising ideas and service projects. Also discussed were the annual Beginning Day picnic and Christmas in August. The "Christmas" event will take place Aug. 24, at 6 p.m., at Lake Hauto. Members will bring a covered dish and a recipe for their favorite holiday dish. Reservations are due by Aug. 17.Senior citizensThe Tamaqua Seniors met July 26 at the Tamaqua Community Center with 89 members in attendance. One new member, Janice Cavallero, was welcomed.President Jean Machamer conducted the business session and read the secretary's report. Rose Valle provided the invocation. Vice President Doris Brobst announced Alice Miller was recuperating at Weatherwood and Jane Springer was added to the sick list.Plans were finalized for an Aug. 16 day trip to Pottsville to tour the Yuengling Brewery and station, as well as have lunch at Grandma's Restaurant. A discussion took place on potential trips to Red Lobster, Olive Garden and a Pennsylvania casino in September.The meeting also included a celebration for 18 members celebrating their birthdays in June and July.The group meets every Thursday, at 1 p.m., at the community center. Anyone 55 or older is welcome to join. Every meeting is followed by social and pinochle games.Movie nightThe East End Playground Association will continue its tradition of offering free summer movies. The next event will be Aug. 8, with a presentation of the movie "Secretariat," beginning at 8:30 p.m.The event is free and open to the public. Moviegoers are welcome to bring a blanket or lawn chair and the concession stand will be open.SS. Peter and PaulSS. Peter and Paul Catholic Church will conduct First Friday observances this week. Communion calls will be made on Thursday for residents of Hometown and Coaldale. All others will begin Friday at 9 a.m. First Friday confessions will be heard at 7:30 a.m., followed by Mass and devotions at 8 a.m.Aug. 6 will be a Fatima Saturday. Confessions will be heard at 7:30 a.m., followed by a Recitation of the Rosary and Devotions prior to the 8 a.m. Mass.Members of the parish Holy Rosary Society will attend the 8 a.m. Mass on Aug. 7 and receive Holy Communion as a group. A rosary will be said prior to the Mass.
