Tony Roos graduated in 1986 and starred in both basketball and baseball while attending Jim Thorpe.

His career began earlier, though, while playing CYO basketball for the St. Joe's Hammers. While there, he scored over 500 points. In 1981, the Hammers finished undefeated with a 17-0 record and won the Allentown Diocesan Basketball Championship and Tony was named MVP of the CYO All-Star game.After his success in CYO, Tony moved on to play for the Olympians and finished with a career total of 1,087 points which placed him 11th on Jim Thorpe's all-time scoring list. Tony always saved his best performances for the second halves of big games, helping his team to victory time and time again in the playoffs. Along with being an excellent scorer, Tony average 80 percent shooting from the foul line.He was named MVP in basketball in 1985 and was a member of one of the best basketball teams in Jim Thorpe history in 1986. That '86 squad, coached by Jim Thorpe Area Sports Hall of Famer Don Herman, won the Panther Valley/Tamaqua Officials Christmas Basketball Tournament, were the Schuylkill League's Division II champions and played for the league championship against Panther Valley. The team qualified for the District 11 and PIAA tournaments. Their tournament appearance took them all the way to the PIAA Eastern Finals as they defeated Lackawanna Trail, Freeland, Galeton and Schuylkill Haven before losing to Bristol in the Eastern Finals.In baseball, Tony was a member of the 1982/1983 Schuylkill League Tri-Champions and in 1983/1984, a member of the Schuylkill League Northern Division champions. In his senior year, Tony finished with a batting average of .380, hit five home runs, and was 10-2 as a pitcher which included 70 strikeouts, a no-hitter, a one-hitter and two two-hitters. As a result of that performance, Tony was named MVP of the baseball team in 1986.After his playing career ended, Tony became an assistant coach for the Olympian baseball team from 1998 to 2005.The Jim Thorpe Area Sports Hall of Fame banquet will be held on Saturday, Aug. 20 at Jim Thorpe Memorial Hall.
