Schuylkill crashes

State police at Schuylkill Haven reported on three crashes investigated by troopers over the past weekend on Schuylkill County roads.

A three vehicle crash was reported at 10:13 a.m. on Friday, July 15, along SR61 near the Cressona Mall entrance in North Manheim Township. Troopers said Mary Matalavage, 87, of New Philadelphia, was northbound in a 1999 Buick Regal in the southbound lane and in the path of a 2010 Dodge Caravan driven by Marc J. Gardner, 30, of Portland, Ore., and a 1996 Volkswagen Jetta operated by Hugo Leon, 29, of Schuylkill Haven.Gardner applied his brakes hard to avoid a head-on collision with Matalavage and his vehicle hit the rear of the Jetta. Matalavage's vehicle was not struck and she turned off the road into a parking lot and stopped.Gardner and Leon were not injured. The Caravan and Jetta had to be towed from the scene. Matalavage was cited for traveling the wrong way on the road.A one-vehicle crash occurred about 12:40 a.m. on Saturday, July 16, along SR443 near Shady Lane, in North Manheim Township. Troopers said Mason Nathaniel Symons, 21, of Schuylkill Haven, was driving a 2008 Ford Edge eastbound when he fell asleep. The car went off the road onto the north berm and up a slight embankment where it struck a PPL utility pole with the front end. The pole was sheered in half.The car continued east and went off the road on the south side and struck a tree where it came to rest. Symons was injured and taken to a Pottsville hospital by a family member, troopers said. Damages were severe to the vehicle.The road was closed for several hours due to the crash.A one vehicle crash occurred about 7:48 a.m. on Saturday along W. Bacon St., in Palo Alto. Troopers said Jerry O. Richards III, 21, of Glenolden, Delaware County, was eastbound and going too fast for conditions when he lost control of his 2008 Pontiac G6. The car began to slid and slammed into a rock embankment along the berm with the front left bumper.After impact the car continued to spin clockwise and the rear left bumper struck the rock embankment. The vehicle came to fine rest facing northwest and blocking the eastbound lane.Richards was not injured. He was cited for driving a vehicle at a (un) safe speed.
