Tamaqua Area School District students participating in sports and/or any extracurricular activity, or who has a school parking permit is subject to random drug and alcohol testing. Random drug testing of non-participating students is also available if the district receives a parental request. Students must provide a signed parent consent form before participating.For the 2011-2012 school year, initial registration/testing will take place in the athletic center locker rooms of the middle school between 8-11 a.m., on the following dates: Aug. 1, boys - grades 7, 8, 9; Aug. 2, boys - grades 10, 11, 12; Aug. 3, girls - grades 7, 8, 9; Aug. 4, girls - grades 10, 11, 12; Aug. 9, make up dates for all students.Any student who cannot attend any of the dates provided should contact Mike Hromyak, athletic director at 668-1901 or mhromyak@tamaqua.k12.pa.us for other arrangements.Becoming part of the random selection process is necessary before participating in any activities.More information is provided on the school district website under athletics.Cross countryThe Tamaqua Cross Country Boosters will meet July 19, at 6:30 p.m., on the steps at the Tamaqua Area Senior High School. Parents of students in grades 7-12 are welcome to attend.The boosters will finalize plans for a July 20 car wash, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., at the Hometown Fire Company.St. John's LutheranThe Rev. Phyllis Wolford will officiate at the 9 a.m. worship service this Sunday in St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church. The time change will be for this Sunday only as a second, outdoor service will be held at 11 a.m. at the Howard Buehler Memorial Park (Bungalow), to kick off the annual summer picnic.Activities for next week include: Thursday, Messenger assembly at 1 p.m.; Saturday, garden maintenance from 8 a.m. to noon.St. Peter's UnionThe Rev. Cheryl Moore will officiate at the 9 a.m. worship service Sunday in St. Peter's Union Church, Mantzville. The service will include a presentation on the Mexico Missions. Summer Sunday school will be held at 9:15 a.m.Vacation Bible School will be held July 18 through July 22, from 6 to 8:30 p.m. The VBS closing program will be held July 24, during the 10 a.m. worship service, which will be held at West Penn Park.ACS makeoverThe American Cancer Society will host a Look Good, Feel Better makeover workshop from 4-6 p.m., July 25, at the ACS office at 33 W. Rideg St., Lansford. The session is free and open to all local female cancer patients actively undergoing cancer treatment.During the session, trained cosmetologists will meet with patients to discuss ways of using makeup and accessories to minimize appearance-related side effects of chemotherapy and radiation treatment. Look Good, Feel Better is offered in a group setting, providing participants with cancer education, information and support.Each woman will learn to apply makeup, using kits provided through the American Cancer Society's partnership with the Cosmetics, Toiletry and Fragrance Association and the National Cosmetology Association.Seating is limited, so registration is required.
