Park receives $85,000 grant for new basketball courts

A Lower Towamensing recreation park has received an $85,000 grant to install basketball courts at its revamped facility.

Brent Green, a member of the township's Recreation Committee, informed the board of supervisors on Tuesday that the Stoney Ridge

P.A.R.C. along Fireline Road has been awarded the funds.Green said the grant came from the Department of Conservation and Economic Development, and was secured through the office of state Rep. Doyle Heffley (R-Carbon) and former state Rep./Speaker of the House Keith McCall.Volunteers - particularly those with construction and excavation experience - are asked to contact the township building to help complete a soil stabilization project, Green said.The courts are expected to be installed by the spring/summer of 2012, he said.In June, 2009, the township held a ribbon-cutting ceremony at the park. The township purchased the land from the Knights of Columbus in 2000.Also on Tuesday, supervisors Chairman Ron Walbert told the audience that about 70-percent of the repairs to Hunter's Creek Bridge have been completed."When it's all finished, it should extend our township bridge by another 25-30 years," Walbert said.In March, supervisors agreed to award a contract to F.A. Rohrbach, of Allentown, in the amount of $43,590 to do the repairs.The project is for the underpinning and wing replacement for the structurally deficient bridge, located on Covered Bridge Road over Hunters Creek.In an unrelated matter, Walbert announced that the township has collected $3,120 in delinquent garbage fees.Walbert then thanked those who paid, and encouraged those who haven't to follow suit as soon as possible.In other business, supervisors:- Tabled a motion to adopt a Knox box ordinance.- Granted the Paul Berger subdivision plan an extension until Sept. 30.- Granted the Brain Stroup subdivision plan a 90-day extension.- Granted the Stable Development Co. Inc., an extension until Oct. 15.- Agreed to take out a half-page ad for the annual convention.- Agreed to have the secretary place a bid ad for 300 ton, 1B, washed stone or less.
