Weissport Council wants run down properties to clean up

Weissport Council members pondered the photographs of a property that needs cleaning up before discussing the continuing need to update the property maintenance ordinance.

Council is hoping to adopt an ordinance that will give police a tool to force property owners to clean up.The photographs of the rear of the home showed a disgraceful mess, but the worst part is that the pile also has a pungent odor.The home discussed is on White Street.Council members said the new ordinance will prohibit debris from piling up.A member of the audience said that the woman living in the home began making the piles because she wants to recycle the items, but has no transportation to transport the items to the recycling center and refuse to allow anyone to help her.Mayor Jonathan Troutman and council member Sue Pywar attempted to meet with the owner following the meeting and returned to the meeting saying, she wasn't home.But the audience member says the owner of the home will not answer the door.Council said that they are aware of the need for help, but that she must cooperate by cleaning up the mess, with or without help.Council secretary Dana Brubaker said that Robert Veneziano of Bellefonte, the high bidder for the used yellow 1997 Ford F-350 dump truck, has not responded to any calls or letters to pick up the truck. Veneziano bid $1,802 to purchase the truck.Brubaker asked council whether she should contact the next person in line. Brubaker said she did send a certified letter to Veneziano.Weissport purchased the truck in December 2008 at a cost of $7,500. The truck was never able to be put on the road because of one mechanical failure or another. Council members decided to put the truck up for bid for scrap metal.Weissport Council received an unsigned letter requesting information about the Red Neck Festival. Council President Tim Rehrig said that since the letter is not signed he does not know who to respond to. The letter sought information about the festival finances and sponsoring organization.The Red Neck Festival will be held Saturday and Sunday over Labor Day weekend. The proceeds from the festival benefit the Weissport Recreation Committee, a nonprofit organization, which has recently built a playground. The committee is currently planning to install permanent electric in the park and complete a gazebo.
