Color added to Franklin playground

The Phifer's Ice Dam playground, built by the Franklin Township Lions Club nearly 20 years ago, has been given new paint and some added color.

Lions Club members have been doing the volunteer work, stating it's the first major such project for the playground.David Hawk, Lions club president, said about eight to 10 club members spent eight hours a day for four days to complete the project. He said all the wooden equipment was stained. The playground equipment had been all brown, but to add color there were locations on the equipment that were painted green or red.Hawk said 33 gallons of stain were used for the project. He said stain was used instead of regular paint because "I want it to look nice but we're concerned with preservation."Two of the Lions Club members who helped with the project are over age 80. They are Raymond Haydt and Art Berger. Another, Carl Gross, is age 79.The playground consists of such facilities as slides, ropes, fireman's pole, swings, climbing equipment and a hang bar.Hawk said it opened in the fall of 1992.
