Despite cool temperatures and a threatening sky, a large crowd enjoyed the free food, swimming and music at the second annual Lehighton School Community/Educational/Safety Program Thursday night at the Baer Memorial Swimming Pool.

Cooperation between the borough, school district and local agencies, including local and state police, made the event happen. A goal of the event was to inspire children to remain in a learning mode throughout the summer.Parents could sign up for sports activities, the summer reading program or learn about Seeing Eye dog programs and get information on local agencies who are helping the homeless. There was also information about math and reading, speech therapy, early education, after school programs.Sue Holland, a Title I teacher and organizer of the event, was pleased at how people were gathering up the information made available by more than two dozen organizations. Various stations offered information on a wide variety of topics, including basic safety, self-awareness, bullying and obesity."We have provided a fun night for the community to gather information about local agencies," said Holland. "It was a good collaborative effort of the school district, police and government."The event allowed families to register for free prizes by having a card punched after reaching each of the stations set up by the organizations. Each person also received a free hot dog, which was served by members of Lehighton Council and school board members."The Doc," Layne Roberts from Penn's Peak Radio, provided free music for the event.
