The Tamaqua American Legion will be hosting its first annual Flag Retirement Ceremony Sunday starting at 2 p.m.

The United States Flag Code states: "The flag, when it is in such condition that it is no longer a fitting emblem of display, should be destroyed in a dignified way, preferably by burning." The flag retirement is expected to last a few hours, although the initial ceremony will last only an hour.The Master of Ceremonies will be Ed Smith and the guest speaker will be Mary Zelonis, a native of Mahanoy City, life member of the VFW and DAV, a Charter member of WIMSA, a member of the Mahanoy Area United Veterans, and a member of the American Legion where she currently holds the position of Eastern Section Historian and is a Deputy Commander in the 13th District. She also participates and provides support in many other veteran support events and functions.The Lansford American Legion Riders will also have their Flag Run in conjunction with this ceremony. Flag Run signups are the same day from 8:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. at the Lansford American Legion Post 123. Departure time is 11 a.m. prompt.Stops include Summit Hill American Legion, Jim Thorpe American Legion, and Lehighton American Legion.
