Sharpe's Deli & Dogs features quality choices with 'family-friendly' prices

In the mood for a hoagie stuffed with fresh salami, ham and cheese? How about a hot roast turkey sandwich, a plate of halupki or a nice beef brisket with stuffing? Or how about a hot dog smothered in melted cheese, bacon and onions?

Sharpe's Deli & Dogs, at 2 East Ridge St., Lansford, is the place to be.Owner Ed Kanick, the former owner, manager and cook of the Palace, has transformed Sharpe's News Agency from a corner store selling greeting cards, candy and newspapers to a deli worthy of the name. The deli has wooden tables where customers can wait while their hoagies or other foods are being made fresh, or they can stay and eat there.Cook and manager Lou Vicorek manned the kitchen for 23 years at the Lansford AMVETS, and knows exactly what it takes to make a great-tasting meal.Kanick and Vicorek didn't just rush into the deli business."We opened at the end of May last year," Vicorek said. But he said they went slowly, publishing their menu in the TIMES NEWS in July."We did it step-by-step. We didn't want to rush into it," he said.Business boomed."It surprised us how busy we were," Vicorek said. They took their time to find the best quality at the best price."We tried different bakeries and different suppliers for meats," Vicorek said. The deli gets its rolls from Tommy's and its meats from Dietz and Watson for example. Vicorek makes his hamburgers fresh daily instead of using frozen, pre-formed patties.Sharpe's prices are "family friendly," Vicorek said.Hoagie prices recently ranged from $5.25 to $5.75; hot hoagies from $5.50 to $5.75; platters - halupki, pulled pork, brisket or fried fish - are $6.25 and include two choices of pasta salad, macaroni salad, macaroni and cheese, french fries or cole slaw.Cold hoagies include regular, tuna, turkey, ham & cheese, roast beef, Italian, BLT and seafood.
