Garden club

The Lewistown Valley Garden Club held its May meeting in the social hall of Zions Church, Lewistown Valley. The business session was conducted by President June Leiby. Special guest speaker was Jean Bachert.Bachert spoke about using "crackle" medium for decorating floral containers made of wood and other items. She also demonstrated creating a floral arrangements and held a question and answer session.Members discussed the upcoming Schuylkill County Fair, scheduled for Aug.1-6, and reviewed the criteria for the Artistic Arrangements section.Members presented arrangements and specimens for judging. First place in the arrangement category went to Evelyn Adams. Second place was awarded to June Leiby, while Mary Bridygham was presented an honorable mention. A number of different specimens were presented. June Leiby was awarded first place for her scabiosa, veronica, choral bells, geranium, and valerian, with a third place for an iris. Linda Leiby was awarded first place for her iris and peony presentation. In the rose category, Dot Ross was presented with the first and second place awards. Other winners were Cindy Sabol, campanula; and Mary Bridygham, iris.A luncheon was presented by Charlotte Lorah and Joan Fritz.The next meeting will be held June 28 at the home of Cindy Sabol.For more information concerning the club or any of its activities, call (570) 668-4288.Cressona bandThe Cressona Band will perform two free mini concerts in Tamaqua this summer.The first event will be held today, at 7 p.m., at the Tamaqua ABC High Rise, 222 E. Broad St. The concert will be sponsored by Shafer's Pharmacy and Dr. Richard Chwastiak.The second concert will be performed July 13, at 7 p.m., at the East End Playground. Rain date will be July 14, same time and place.The public is welcome. Featured music will include show tunes, marches, overtures and songs of yesteryear.SS. Peter and PaulThe Holy Name Society of SS. Peter and Paul Catholic Church will meet this Thursday, at 8 p.m., in the social hall. The meeting will be preceded by a Mass, which will begin at 7:30 p.m.Senior newsThe Tamaqua Senior Citizens group met June 2 with 86 members in attendance. Two new members, Edward and Monica Schiverfield, were welcomed. Rose Vallee offered an inspirational reading, entitled "Sights and Sounds of Spring."President Jean Machamer conducted the business session. April and May birthdays were celebrated, honoring Sis Mengel, Margaret Matsago, Leona Machay, Madeline Heffelfinger, Margie Skymba, Dolores Boyle, Tom Gallagher, Rose Eich, Nancy Godanis, Antoinette Triano, Gladys Arner, Joan Bonner and Theresa Dunkelberger.The next meeting will be held Thursday, at 1 p.m., at the Tamaqua Community Center, located to the rear of Boyer's Food Mart. Guest speaker will be Janene Holter, whose topic will be crime prevention. Anyone 55 or older is welcome to join. The meeting room is handicap accessible.
