Rare tiles in Tamaqua

Alan Thompson of Roccograndi Construction Co. displays a tile from the front facade of the 1916 Scheid's Department Store building, 24-26 W. Broad St., Tamaqua, where a large-scale facade restoration project has begun. According to documentation in the Tamaqua National Historic District inventory of resources, the building's white glazed terra cotta tiles may be the work of noted Pottsville architect F.X. Reilly. The historic, four-story building, currently occupied by Tire Pros, also includes a baked enamel storefront and granite cornices. The Classical Revival structure's facade will be restored, complete with a return of the large glass windows on three upper floors, a key identifying feature that made the Scheid's store a landmark in downtown. Previously, the site hosted the United States Hotel, signficant to the Molly Maguire story.
