A Berks County man drowned in the Schuylkill River in Schuylkill County on Wednesday.

State police at Schuylkill Haven said Jason Lamont Morris, 28, of 1548 Cotton St., Reading, jumped into the river from an area known as "the rock" in West Brunswick Township, about 5:35 p.m. The drop was about 20 feet, troopers said.Once in the water Morris had a difficult time swimming back to shore due to the rapid current. He eventually was pulled under the water from the current and drowned.His body was pulled from the river by members of the Schuylkill Haven Dive Team about 30 yards east of where he entered the river.Assisting troopers and the dive team was the Port Clinton and Hamburg fire companies, Hamburg ambulance, Shoemakersville and West Berks Machine units and the Reading dive team.
