A woman, who drove drunk with a young child in the vehicle, was sentenced to a county prison term on Tuesday. She was one of several defendants who previously pleaded guilty to be sentenced by Schuylkill County Senior Judge D. Michael Stine, specially presiding in Carbon County.

Marretta R. McGeehan, 25, of Coaldale, and formerly of Lehighton, was sentenced to serve six to 24 months in prison on a charge of driving under the influence (DUI). She was also sentenced to serve 90 days in jail on a charge of driving while under suspension-DUI related. The jail terms run concurrently.McGeehan was arrested on Oct. 11, 2010, by Mahoning Township police along Blakeslee Blvd. after being observed driving erratically. Given a test, the result was .14BAC.Found in the vehicle at the time was McGeehan's four-year-old daughter.Stine told McGeehan that the sentence may appear to be harsh on the face, but added, "Looking at the circumstances with your daughter in the vehicle, you are getting a break." Stine said something very serious could have happened because driving drunk could have led to an accident and injuries to the young girl.In addition to the jail term Stine ordered McGeehan to pay a fine of $500 on the DUI count, one year license suspension, get both a drug and alcohol (D&A) and mental health evaluations and follow any recommendations for treatment, and zero tolerance imposed on D&A use. On the suspension count a fine of $1,000 was imposed and another year license suspension.She was given credit for 43 days spent in jail to date on the charge and was returned to the county prison.Other casesOther defendants who appeared before Stine included:Jeffrey Evan Fisher, 51, of Pamerton, was sentenced to serve one to 18 months in prison on a charge of criminal attempt-theft. He was arrested on Jan. 10 by Palmerton police attempting to steal copper wiring from a Chestnut Ridge Railroad site in the borough. All the items were recovered as police caught Fisher in the act.Stine also imposed a fine of $100 and costs on a charge of criminal trespass.Fisher will begin the jail term on June 10 at 9 a.m. and serve it on consecutive weekends.Shane Roger Rex, 22, of Lehighton, was sentenced to serve one to one day less 24 months in the county prison on a charge of possession of a prohibited weapon. He was arrested by Lehighton police on July 13, 2009, in the 100 block of S. Sixth St. He had in his possession a stung gun without a permit.Stine also ordered he get both D&A and mental health evaluations and imposed zero tolerance on D&A use.Nioma Beth Bernstein, 38, of Laceyville, Wyoming County, was sentenced to serve five days to six months in jail on a DUI charge. She was arrested on April 22, 2010, byFranklin Township police along SR209. Given a test, the result was .23BAC.She was also ordered to pay a fine of $300, license suspended for a year, get a D&A evaluation, and render three hours of community work per month while on parole. On a charge of false indentification to police she was placed on probation for a year running concurrently with the DUI charge.On two summary motor vehicle code violations she was fined a total of $50 and costs.She will begin the jail term on June 10 at 8 p.m. and serve it on consecutive weekends. She was given credit for one day spent in jail on the charge.Each defendant must also pay all court costs and a $50 per month supervision fee while on probation or parole.
