Disaster relief

Zion United Lutheran Church of Brodheadsville has a disaster response team named Mission Possible. The group is in its 15th year.The first trip was to Moorhead, MN and Fargo, ND in 1997. Each year since then Mission Possible has gone someplace in the U.S. to assist in rebuilding homes damaged from a natural disaster.This May the group of 11 went to Nashville, and included Zion members Frank McCarthy, Diane Payne, Jamie Schuler, Bob Neuman, Kevin Bochantin and Charles and Joanne Rush. The group worked on four different homes while staying at a home owned by the Episcopal Church that is being used by Lutheran Disaster Relief.All did hands-on repair work while Joanne Rush was able to help the director, Kathy Thoreson, with office work.Our Lady Queen of PeaceAs of May 31, the office hours for Our Lady Queen of Peace are 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday through Friday.The church community expresses its thanks to Jane Martin for her dedication and commitment to the Altar and Rosary Society during her two years as president. Arlene Mullery, McMichaels, will now serve as president.Western Pocono LionsThe Western Pocono Lions CLub board of directors are slated to meet at the Western Pocono Community Library in Brodheadsville at 7 p.m., Wednesday, June 1.Members of the club have done the work at the triangle between Route 209 and Route 115 in Brodheadsville. Members recently put up larger flags in time for Memorial Day.Back homeRay and June Butler of McMichaels were among the delegates to the Methodist Annual Conference held in Valley Forge May 18 -21. They extended their trip to Lancaster to celebrate their fifth anniversary.Business meetingThe West End Rotary Club will hold its monthly club assembly or business meeting at 7:30 a.m., Thursday, June 2, at the Western Pocono Community Library in Brodheadsville.Garden of GivingThe board of directors for the Garden of Giving will meet at 6:30 p.m. June 6, at the home of Tammy Graber in McMichaels. Planting has begun and will continue in earnest this coming week end, weather permitting.All Sports ClubThe All Sports Club will meet at the Pleasant Valley High School Library at 7:30 p.m., June 6.Chestnuthill supervisorsThe next meeting of the Chestnuthill Township Supervisors will be at 7 p.m., Tuesday, June 7, at the Chestnuthill Township Municipal Building on Route 715.Monroe SeniorsThis group continues to meet at 9 a.m., Wednesdays and Fridays at Zion Lutheran Church in Brodheadsville.Pentecost celebratedMany area churches will celebrate Pentecost Sunday on June 12. For some, it will be a time to confirm young folks who want to affirm, to confirm their baptismal vows.Zion Lutheran will be confirming its young folks on Pentecost Sunday.Choir comingThe West End Assembly of God Church Youth Choir from Richmond, Va., will be coming to Effort UMC on June 22.The choir consists of 80 youth and the group has sung at least at 60 churches of all sizes.At the invitation of the warden of Fluvanna Women's Correctional Institution the choir does one or two concerts there each April. In addition, the choir has performed on Chicago's Navy Pier, in New York City's Battery Park and at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in Ohio.The group also works and sings in homeless shelters and missions such as Helping Up Mission in Baltimore, Hope for the Future Ministries in Manhattan or with children's ministries such as Metro Ministries of Brooklyn.
