Luzerne man given state prison term for burglary

A Luzerne County man was sentenced to a state prison term on Tuesday for a burglary in Weatherly.

Gerald Van Antonio Pinheiro, 26, of Wilkes-Barre, was sentenced to serve one to two years in a state prison by Carbon County Judge Steven R. Serfass.Pinheiro previously pleaded guilty to the charge. He was arrested by borough police for a break-in at 540 W. Main St. with Samantha Anne Marie Sopko the listed victim. Taken in the entry was two MP3 players.Pinheiro claimed he was "high' after inhaling bath salts. Defense Atty. Gregory Mousseau told the court his client had a long battle with drug addiction and said he believes the state system is the best place for him to address the addiction problem and also to learn a skill which will enable him to get a job when released.Pinheiro said he committed the crime to get money to buy drugs.In addition to the prison term Serfass ordered Pinheiro to make total restitution of $722, get a drug and alcohol evaluation and follow any recommendation for treatment, render three hours of community work per month when on parole, supply a DNA sample and pay a $50 monthly supervision fee while on parole.Pinheiro was given credit for 64 days spent in jail on the charge.
