Bid approved for culvert replacement

A bid was approved, land acquired, ordinances discussed, conditional use approved, and a race request denied. Those discussions and ensuing decisions were the major portion of the May 23 meeting of the Polk Township supervisors.

The bid approval was for the Lower Middle Creek culvert replacement and it was awarded to the lowest bidder, Northeast Site Contractors with a bid of $102,261.85.Six bids were received by the township, ranging from two which were over $193,000 each on down to the Northeast bid. The lowest three were reviewed by the township engineer and the solicitor also reviewed the recommended bid before the supervisors voted 3-0 to accept Northeast's.The land the board agreed to purchase for $1,000 plus expenses is in Dotters Corner and the purchase could cure two problems as the intersection is upgraded agreed the trio.The Supervisors also agreed to spend $4,000 for 237 feet of guide rail on Upper Green Hill Road and $350 for the removal of a large dead tree on Long Mountain Road.Several ordinances were discussed and several will be advertised for adoption at the next supervisors meeting. One is the open burning ordinance and another the re-addressing ordinance. A third is the the yard sale ordinance amendment, which will define the number of yard sales allowed per year and also restrict parking on township roads.The conditional use request by Albanese was granted with stipulations, as per recommendation by the solicitor, included.A request by Radnar Events to have a 200-mile relay race coming through Hell Hollow Road, which the entity requested be coned, was denied due to various safety concerns, including the narrowness of the road, thee condition of it, etc.A company representative will be invited to come to PolkTownship to drive the road so that person can see the conditions and hazards. The race is slated to start in Lancaster and include teams of 12 runners each.Secretary Supervisor Nancy May announced composting workshops being held at the Monroe County Waste Authority site in Blakeslee the second Saturday of each month. For more information about these free trainings, held in conjunction with Penn State Extension in Monroe County and the Master Gardener Program one can call the Waste Authority at (610)643-6100 or goto the web.Also announced was the township's Memorial Day ceremony to be held at 2 p.m., May 29, at the Veterans Memorial in Kresgeville. The fire company will assist with traffic.Residents and friends are reminded to bring lawn chairs. Parking is at the church or at the business complex across from the memorial.The fire company reported the volunteers have had 72 calls year-to-date, with 25 this past month.West End Park and OpenSpace Commission thanked the supervisors for posting its activities, including tennis lessons of various skill levels.A thank you letter was received commending the township for its work and more involvement in the Crime Watch meetings are hoped for.
