The Rush, Ryan and Delano Senior Citizens Inc. held its 32nd Anniversary Banquet May 10 at the Ryan Township Fire Company with 48 members in attendance. President Eleanor Schmerfeld provided opening remarks and the invocation. Christy Joy catered the meal.Shirley Becker reported sending a get well card to Betty Kunkel. The afternoon included social games and fellowship.The group meets the second and fourth Monday of every month. Anyone 50 or older is welcome to join.Kindergarten newsThe Tamaqua Area School District will have a make up day for kindergarten registration for the 2011-2012 school year. The district is offering this opportunity to parents/guardians of kindergarten age children who missed the March session.The make up day will be held May 24. To schedule an appointment, call (570) 668-3306, Monday through Friday, between the hours of 9:30-11:30 a.m. and 1-2:30 p.m.Board of healthThe Tamaqua Board of Health held its May meeting with Earl Boettger, James Gormley and Shirley Becker in attendance.A report from Health Enforcement Officer James Barron was read, indicating he made six spot check inspections during April: Pieracini's Market; Domino's Pizza; Hunan Kitchen; Subway, Inc.; Chili Dog; and Martha's Place. He also received and adjusted seven complaints: five for scattered rubbish/garbage; one unfit for human habitation; and one infestation.There were no cases of reportable diseases during April.SWNCThe South Ward Neighborhood Committee will meet May 19, at 7 p.m., in the Lehigh Carbon Community College Morgan Center. The group will be discussing a ribbon-cutting ceremony for the new community center and remodeled playground.SS. Peter and PaulA Baccalaureate Mass for graduates of SS. Peter and Paul's parish will be held May 29 at 8 a.m. Graduates will meet in the social hall prior to the Mass and are reminded to wear their caps and gowns. Coffee and doughnuts will be served after Mass, in the social hall.Senior newsThe Tamaqua Senior Citizens group met May 12 with 89 members in attendance. One new member, Joyce Krell, was welcomed.President Jean Machamer conducted the business session. Eleanor Roberts offered the invocation, entitled "Don't Join the Grumblers."Reports were offered by Vice President Doris Brobst and secretary Joan Anne Garber. The annual memorial luncheon will be held May 26.A moment of silence was held in honor of the veterans.The next meeting will be held Thursday, at 1 p.m., at the Tamaqua Community Center, located to the rear of Boyer's Food Mart. Anyone 55 or older is welcome to join. The meeting room is handicap accessible.Owl Creek newsA clean up and spring planting day is scheduled this Saturday at the Owl Creek Community Park. Volunteers are needed between the hours of 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. Anyone willing to donate an hour or two of their time should just report to the park.St. Peter's UnionThe Rev. Cheryl Moore will officiate at the 9 a.m. worship service Sunday in St. Peter's Union Church, Mantzville. Sunday school classes will meet at 10:15 a.m.Also on Sunday, Brownies and Daisies meet at 6:30 p.m.Activities for next week include: Wednesday, pre-school graduation at 7 p.m.; Thursday, pre-school moving up ceremony at 10 a.m., prayer group meets at 5 p.m., Confirmation class meets at 6 p.m. and Brownies meet at 6:30 p.m.The choirs rehearse on Thursdays. The group is open to all Schuylkill County citizens who reside east of Pottsville, including the Boroughs of Middleport, Tamaqua and Coaldale, as well as all the townships and Villages in between.New members are always welcome.High school assemblyParents and family members of Tamaqua Area Senior High School students are welcome to attend the annual achievement assembly, which will be held May 23, beginning at noon. The event will be held in the district auditorium.
