Sunday School class plans dinner to help man injured in accident

A Sunday School class at St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church, 826 Mahoning Drive West, Lehighton, is gearing up to serve an All You Can Eat Community Spaghetti Dinner, to raise funds for a man who was injured in a swimming pool accident last year. The spaghetti dinner will be served from 4 to 7 p.m. on Saturday, May 21 at the church. For ticket information, call Jan at 570-386-2073. The meal includes spaghetti, meatballs, salad, bread, applesauce, drink and a homemade dessert.

The dinner will be prepared and served by the class and all funds raised will help pay medical costs or to help purchase a handicapped van for Richard "Digger" Bloom. Bloom, 44, who was injured on July 23 in a swimming pool in his backyard, an injury that broke his neck and caused him to become paralyzed below the neck.Jan Wentz, Sunday School teacher, said that the students thought of the project on their own and plan to do most of the work.Bridget McFadden, one of the students, said that she is planning to cook and help serve, while Haley Moyer said she will make the meatballs. Shelby Solomon has been selling tickets and Christopher Kurdziel has been making signs and helping with advertising."We've been talking a lot about service to others," said Wentz. "God commands us to serve and help other people, but that we need to do it with love."She said she is proud of the students who are in middle school and high school who want to put the lessons they learned in Sunday School into practice.Since his accident, Bloom has spent time at Good Shepherd Rehabilitation Hospital and at Mountain City Rehab as an outpatient.Before his accident, Digger worked for Werner Trucking, Fogelsville as a shop manager. He is the husband of Joyce (Hansler) Bloom.
