Beta Sigma Phi Sorority held its annual Founder's Day celebration April 27 at La Dolce Casa Restaurant in Tamaqua. Members of the Tamaqua and Pottsville chapters were in attendance. The Best Program Award was presented to Donna Sterling, Preceptor Alpha Upsilon Chapter, for "A Taste of Chocolate." Chapter President Lori Scherfeld was named "Girl of the Year."Members of the Preceptor Alpha Upsilon Chapter met May 4 at the home of Diane Pruett. Details were finalized for a used clothing drive on June 3-4. The drop off site will be the American Hose Company, Tamaqua. Hours will be Friday from 6-8 p.m. and Saturday, 9 a.m. to noon. Items are to be placed in trash bags, with shoes and toys in separate bags.Diane presented a program about caring for and preserving silver jewelry. Following the business session, members were treated to homemade pie and ice cream.The next regular meeting will be held May 25, at 7:30 p.m., at the home of Helen Walters. The meeting will include the Secret Sister birthday party.Installation of officers will be held June 6, at 6 p.m., at Heisler's Dairy Bar.St. John's LutheranThe Rev. Phyllis Wolford will officiate at the 9:15 a.m. worship service this Sunday in St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church. The service will include recognition of the Angel Choir. Confirmation and Sunday school classes meet at 10:30 a.m.Also on Sunday, the Fellowship/Social Ministry Committee will meet at 8:30 a.m.The choirs will rehearse next Thursday: Chime Choir meets at 5:30 p.m., Shepherds at 6:30 p.m. and Praise Choir at 7:30 p.m. Also on Thursday, the Executive Committee will meet at 6:30 p.m.BloodmobileAn American Red Cross Bloodmobile will be held May 25 in Tamaqua. St. John United Church of Christ, Pine and Biddle streets, will serve as the collection site. Hours will be from 1-6 p.m.Anyone 17 or older, who weighs at least 110 pounds and is in general good health is eligible to donate blood. Each unit of donated blood has the potential to help save three lives. Donor cards or proper identification will be required.Donors may make an appointment by calling 1-800-RED-CROSS.SWNCThe South Ward Neighborhood Committee will meet May 19, at 7 p.m., in the Lehigh Carbon Community College Morgan Center. The group will be discussing a ribbon cutting ceremony for the new community center and remodeled playground.
