Pitts named Athlete of Year

Tamaqua graduate Travis Pitts was recently named the 2011 Middle Atlantic Conference Outdoor Track Athlete of the Year after winning two events at the conference meet.

Pitts, a junior at Delaware Valley College, won both the 100 and 200 meters at the meet held at Messiah College.Pitts, who earlier in the season broke a 27-year old school record in the 100 with a time of 10.68, bettered the mark with a 10.61 in the conference meet. The former Blue Raider, who also won the 100 at last year's MAC meet and has provisionally qualified for the NCAA Championships, missed the conference record of 10.60 by one-hundredth of a second. In the 200, Pitts broke the tape first in a time of 22.08. That figure just missed another school record (22.04).In addition to his first-place finishes, Pitts was a part of Delaware Valley's 4 x 100 relay team that finished second in a time of 43.50. That time qualified them for the ECAC Championships.
