Choral concert

The Tamaqua Senior High/Middle School Spring Choral Concert will be held this Thursday in the Tamaqua Area Auditorium. Doors will open at 6:45 p.m., with the concert slated to begin at 7:30 p.m.A variety of numbers will be presented by the Middle School Chorus, the Jazz Chorale and the Concert Choir. Accompanists will include Steven Moyer, Julian Gerace, Erin Raymond and Emily Zancofsky.The choirs are under the direction of John Buglio.Senior newsThe Tamaqua Senior Citizens group met April 28 with 75 members in attendance. Two new members, Mary and Glenn Gerhard, were welcomed to the group. A former member, Nora Sheidy, returned to active status. President Jean Machamer offered the invocation, entitled "Unseen Beauty," conducted the business session and read the secretary's report.A discussion was held on two upcoming events: a trip to the Shady Maple Smorgasbord on May 9; an Seniors' Day at Knoebel's Grove on June 22. The Schuylkill Transportation System will be providing serve to Knoebel's that day.Harry Heffelfinger was added to the sick list. A condolence card was sent to former Vice President Jean Behr on the loss of her husband.Pinochle players are still needed for card sessions held following the meeting.The next meeting will be held Thursday, at 1 p.m., at the Tamaqua Community Center, located to the rear of Boyer's Food Mart. Anyone 55 or older is welcome to join. The meeting room is handicap accessible.Mini relayTamaqua Area Middle School students will be participating in a mini Relay for Life event on May 6 at the Tamaqua Sports Stadium. Each grade has been given an individual time frame for their "leg" of the relay," making it possible for family and friends to join or observe them.Sixth grade students will take to the track from 9-10 a.m.; seventh grade from 10:10 to 11:10 a.m. and eighth graders will participate from 11:15 a.m. to 12:15 p.m.The students are also engaged in a "penny war." All proceeds will benefit the American Cancer Society.May 6 will also be a dress down day to benefit the ACS.SS. Peter and PaulFirst Friday observances will be held this week for members of SS. Peter and Paul Catholic Church. Communion calls will be made on Thursday for residents of Hometown and Coaldale. All others will begin Friday at 9 a.m. First Friday confessions will be heard at 7:30 a.m., followed by Mass and devotions at 8 a.m.May 7 will be a Fatima Saturday. Confessions will be heard at 7:30 a.m., followed by a Recitation of the Rosary and Devotions prior to the 8 a.m. Mass.The parish Holy Name Society will meet May 5 at 8 p.m. The meeting will be preceded by Mass at 7:30 a.m.St. John's LutheranThe Rev. Phyllis Wolford will officiate at the 9:15 a.m. worship service this Sunday in St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church. The service will include a Mother's Day celebration and will be followed by a coffee hour. Confirmation and Sunday school classes meet at 10:30 a.m.Activities for next week include: Monday, graveside service at 2 p.m., Church Council meets at 7 p.m.; Wednesday, Spring Mission District meeting at 6:30 p.m., at St. John; Thursday, Chime Choir meets at 5:30 p.m., Angel Choir rehearses at 6 p.m., Shepherds at 6:30 p.m. and Praise Choir at 7:30 p.m.
