The Western Pocono Lioness Club accepted two new members recently, Joan Hoffman and MaryAnn LaLumina and also held election of officers.During the meeting reports were given on the upcoming fall luncheon and fashion show, the recent Holistic Fair and discussion took place about next year's event.The Lioness Spring Rally, scheduled for 6 p.m. May 12 at JD Citros in Lehighton was also announced.The club also donated $100 to West End Mission and $1,000 to the West End Ecumenical Network.30-Hour FamineNot only did the youth of Effort UMC hold a 30-Hour Famine to benefit World Vision this past weekend, but they and youth leader Ken Edwards led the worship times at Effort UMC, presenting skit in pantomime, to a spoken script over the church's audio system that included two segments:The Baptism of Jesus and Jesus Calls His First Disciples.It was tiring at times, it was fun, said Edwards about the 30-hour time of togetherness.The message was about God and hope, he explained.A video segment underlined the focus of World Vision: We're Here to Help the Starving Children of Africa.A lighting of candles and then the dousing of those candles as a bell tolled for a child dying every 3 seconds, gave visual impact to the statistic.Feel Good bingoChestnuthill Seniors, meeting at Zion Lutheran Church's fellowship hall in Brodheadsville will be hearing (and doing?) a new kind of bingo as April Palhofski from PennMed Consultants, Inc., presents Feel Good Bingo to the group at 11:15 a.m. Wednesday, May 4.The program is free and open to the public.For more information call Prime Time Health at (570) 420-3746.On Wednesday, May 11, the Seniors' program is Heart Healthy Women by Nurse Judy from Caregiver's America.Kite flyingThere will be free kite flying at Haney-VanBuskirk Park, Saylorsburg, from 10 a.m. until noon, Saturday, May 7.For more information contact Bernie Kozen, executive director, West End Park & Open Space Commission, at (570) 992-9733 or (570) 807-5561 or by email at

grasee@ptd.net.Many Hands neededZion United Lutheran Church in Brodheadsville is in need of 200 multigenerational volunteers to help assemble 37,000 food packets from 1-2:30, 2:30-4 or 1-4 p.m. on May 14 for the Kids Against Hunger service project.The packets have been scientifically designed to nutritionally feed a starving child in order to significantly reduce hunger in the United States as well as worldwide.The boxes of food packets will be going to our local food pantries and to the Haitian children through the Lazarus Project.The $10,404 in funds raised by individual and group donations, the Stroudsburg School District "Dress Down Day," the Zion Lutheran Pancake Breakfast and the Kids Against Hunger Concert are being used to purchase the ingredients for the packets.One packet will feed six adults or 12 children.Volunteers must register by May 9.For more information or to register as a volunteer, contact Nancy Joy Koch at:
