Senate approves bill to provide for special license plates for veterans

HARRISBURG - Today, the Senate Appropriations Committee unanimously approved Senate Bill 468 legislation sponsored by Senator David Argall to provide special vehicle plates for recipients of the Silver Star, Bronze Star and Bronze Star with Valor.

"This legislation was suggested to me by Mayor Michael Cooper of Deer Lake, an Iraq war veteran," said Argall. "I am constantly reminded how many brave men and women we have selflessly serving our nation from all across Pennsylvania. In an effort to appreciate the great efforts of our brave men and women, it is my hope we can recognize them in all ways possible."Mayor Cooper and fellow veterans suggested this legislation to Senator Argall in an effort to recognize more veterans that served in the Iraq and Afghanistan theaters.Argall's bill will amend the Vehicle Code to provide for special vehicle registration plates for recipients of the Silver Star, Bronze Star and Bronze Star with Valor. Through this legislation, recipients may apply for the special license plates by paying a $20 fee in addition to the annual registration fee and by providing such documentation as required by the Department of Transportation. The registration plates may only be used on a passenger car or truck with a registered gross weight of not more than 10,000 pounds.
