Over 70 Carbon County residents were treated to a variety of educational topics Thursday at the Mahoning Valley Ambulance Association building in Mahoning Township.

During the Carbon County Penn State Cooperative Extension's annual holiday program, titled "Spring is in The Air," residents had the opportunity to learn about lavender, fitness, wreath making, and bugs.Mindy Graver, family living educator at Penn State Cooperative Extension, Carbon County and organizer of the event, said she was thrilled with the program attendance."I'm very pleased, she said, noting that she thought the thunderstorms that rolled through the area early yesterday morning would deter some people from attending.Guest speakers at the daylong program included Maryann Serafini, a Penn State University - Carbon County Master Gardener, who spoke about the history of lavender and its uses; Missi Kupetz, personal trainer at Health Works and certified group instructor, who discussed tips and guidelines on fitness and also demonstrated some easy but beneficial exercises; Patti Moyer, PSU - Schuylkill County Master Gardener, who showed the attendees how to make a living wreath that they can make and enjoy at their home; and Dwane Miller, Penn State Cooperative Extension Agricultural Educator in Carbon and Schuylkill counties, who talked about bugs and how to control them.The program provided the attendees with facts, figures and ideas about a variety of topics.Each participant was also given a packet that included more in-depth information on each subject, contact information for different agencies, tips and hints, alerts and more.Following the presentations, the residents had the opportunity to speak with members of the Master Gardener Program about any gardening questions they may have and win door prizes.
