Nesquehoning Council meeting got off to a rocky note on Wednesday night. The first two hours were devoted to recreation issues and then an executive session.

Representatives of the Little League program questioned the removal of a basketball net behind the Nesquehonig Recreation Center which adjoins the Little League field. The Nesquehoning Woman's Club donated the new net and rim and it was one of three installed in the community. But with the new police station located there and police cars parked in the area near the entrance, the basketballs were hitting the police cars. So the entire pole with net were taken down for the time being. Borough workers will install the basketball pole in another area of the parking lot.Missing from the meeting was councilman Frank DiMiceli. John McArdle, Nesquehoning Hose Company Fire Chief, said through the efforts of Police Officer Tim Wuttke, a disaster was averted from the community. The chemical spill at Ametek proved to be very hazardous and Officer Wuttke prevented the truck from leaving the plant.A letter of commendation will be placed in his file. McArdle said special thanks go out to Nesquehoning businesses for supporting the firefighters. Thanks went out to Rizotto's, McDonald's, Three Points, Turkey Hill, Top Star, and KME. Kovatch's provided Plant 21 to keep everyone together. Nesquehoning Mayor Tony Walck, who was at the scene of the spill said, "It could have been catastrophic".Franzosa Trucking Co, Inc. was hired as the low bidder for the reconstruction of Cedar Street at a bid of $44,500.A motion was made to hire an Apprentice Sewer Operator for the Sewer Plant. Borough employee Bob Pilla is now an Operator II at the plant and will be compensated starting with the current pay period. He was also given permission to take home the Sewer Plant truck in case of an emergency.On Saturday, May 7, the Little League will hold a parade to note their Opening Day of baseball. The parade will begin at 9 a.m. from the VFW and go down Center Street to the Little League Field. They will be led by a fire truck and the Nesquehoning Ambulance will take up the rear of the parade.There are two openings on the Nesquehoning Recreation Commission. Anyone interested can apply at the borough office. Help is also needed on Wednesday nights at bingo in the center's kitchen.The Nesquehoning Junior Recreation Committee gave $200 to the recent American Cancer Society's telethon.The Nesquehoning fire fighters will use the late Frank Parano's house on West Catawissa Street for fire practice and received permission from the borough.Mark Stromelo, council president, asked council memeber Michael Sniscak why he took a sanitation worker to the Tamaqua Transfer Plant. The teamsters heard about it and council was notified that it's against the law. Sniscak has been telling Stromelo that he can get lower figures for transferring of garbage at the Tamaqua facility. He was told to get figures in writing for this council meeting, but so far nothing has been turned in.
